Publication Type: Invited Paper Abstract: This essay draws on Chandra Talpade Mohanty’s critique of the “third world female” as a frame to guide the analysis of U.S. popular music. Specifically, this essay explores how song lyrics and videos written by Sting and U2, although attempting to “give voice” to the female relatives of the disappeared in Latin America, instead perpetuate the notion of the “third world female subject.” The perpetuation of the “third world female subject” is apparent through the lyrics and images that function to dis(empower) Latin American women. When juxtaposed with representations of Latin American women themselves, the dis(empowering) lyrics and images become even more apparent. |
