Abstract:

Objective: To assess pharmacy students’ professional practice skills as measured by an objective tool. To evaluate the construct validity of the tool and student confidence in practical skills after completing the Professional Practice Laboratory in the fifth year of a doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program.
Methods: An objective tool was developed to measure the skills required for the successful entrance into the advanced practice experience. The tool measures five essential skills which include (1) patient counseling, (2) proper selection of over the counter products, (3) physical assessment, (4) prescription interpretation through accurate prescription labeling, and (5) medical nomenclature including dermatologic descriptions. Baseline and post-baseline scores, evaluating these areas, were obtained at the beginning and end of the academic year. A survey was also administered to each student to obtain demographic information and their opinions regarding their confidence in each skill. We analyzed the percent change in scores for each skill and evaluated the relationship between demographics and percent change in scores. Construct validity of the tool was assessed through a survey administered to pharmacy practice educators.
Results: Ninety-two students participated in the Pharmacy Practice Laboratory. Significant increases were seen in skills scores. While baseline skills scores found to be low as expected, increases were seen in the percent change from baseline at the end of the academic year.
Implications: This objective tool measuring five practical skills was found to be valid. Pharmacy students showed significant increases in skills scores suggesting they will be adequately prepared for the advanced practice experience.
