Abstract:

While traditional media coverage of campaigns remains strong, candidate websites represent a source of political information rising in importance and pervasiveness. This research uses two studies to track local newspaper coverage and candidate website traffic in the 2006 senatorial elections and the early 2008 presidential primaries. Results indicate traditional media strength among frontrunners and incumbents while Democrats and outsider candidates demonstrate stronger website traffic. These results illuminate party differences and the use of media for varied political information seeking goals.
