Abstract:
|
This essay investigates Social Identity Theory (SIT) and Self-Categorization Theory (SCT). These two interlocking theories seem to provide a dynamic approach to the manner in which human beings produce social identities. However, as one reads closer, it becomes evident that SIT/SCT’s functionalist/ontological approach to identity forecloses the possibility of being dynamic at all. By approaching these problems from a post-structuralist perspective, a truly dynamic understanding of the social/historical nature of identity categorizations can be had. |
