A Critique of the 'Race and Gender' Discursive Space Constructed in the American Political Arena by Clinton and Obama in the 2008 Presidential Campaign

Abstract:

This essay initially focuses on the rhetorical vision of race and gender created by the joint-political communication of the Obama and Clinton campaigns for the Democratic nomination in the 2008 presidential campaign. It then deconstructs this vision as a discursive place from which frank and progressive public discussions of racism and sexism in the United States may emerge. Finally, selected examples of such discourse, conventional (such as Robin Morgan’s “Goodby to All That #2” essay) and unconventional (such as “blogger talk” about and framing of the Democratic front-runners), are critiqued.
