Abstract:

This study content analyzed college students’ popular television programs (33 shows) and combined the results with participants’ (N = 773) reported viewing levels to create Verbal Aggression Television Consumption Index (VATCI) for every individual. We examined the effects of personality factors on VATCI (both overall and by genres). Sensation seeking and viewer aggression positively predicted overall VATCI, and in particular VATCI for reality TV, sitcoms, animated sitcoms, and political satires. Implications of findings are discussed.
