Abstract:

Online venues represent commonly used, rich sources of social support. This paper advances a framework that appreciates nuances in social support and CMC to illustrate how they synthesize in complex ways. Social support is examined within six mediated venues: support groups, discussion boards, chat rooms, social networking sites, instant messaging programs, and virtual communities. For each venue, theory and empirical research are employed to discuss defining features, support mechanisms, and support-enhancing qualities.
