Publication Type: Invited Paper Abstract: This presentation examines processes of student socialization into teaching and learning cultures, what it means to teach (and learn) cross-culturally, and commonly held notions of how training and experience play in preparing students and faculty for in-class and out-of-class cross-cultural exchanges. Campuses can improve their efforts to mitigate potentially painful misunderstandings between students, their peers, and faculty by developing 1) a better sense of students' cultural conceptualizations of teacher/student relationships and 2) a comprehensive understanding of the roles various types of socialization (programmatic and personal) play in professional development and student learning. |
