Abstract:

The importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the management of business-society relationship has received a new impetus from globalization. As the concept gains global currency, it is equally imperative to contextualize CSR and understand how each how each culture and society gives meaning to the concept, the issues it chooses to address, and the modes it deploys to support these issues. This study aims to further our understanding of the manifestations of CSR in India through examining CSR-related discourse on the websites of leading companies in India’s celebrated information-technology industry. We find convergence of global and local influences on the concept and practice of CSR attributable to a complex confluence of national history, socio-economic development needs, cultural values, and the (global) nature of the IT industry itself. Our study illustrates how a global concept is adapted to local priorities, is oriented towards a “caring” approach (as opposed to the western approach of aligning CSR with business), and possibly signals a shift from the historical emphasis on philanthropy to partnership and collaboration. Finally, we advance conceptual and managerial implications for examining CSR in emerging economies.
