Abstract:

Intent: To engage students at a satellite campus with distance education to participate in student organizations. Process: Student participation in student organizations was approached in a variety of ways: (i) the student government association (SGA) constitution was amended; (ii) the organizational gala was held during student orientation to ensure students from both campuses would be present; (iii) students from the satellite were permitted to pledge pharmacy fraternities at the main campus; (iv) the students at the satellite campus were encouraged to begin a new student organization that would be open to students at both campuses but housed at the satellite. Outcomes: The amended SGA constitution ensures voting members from both campuses. Each pharmacy class has a vice president and secretary from both campuses. Presently, the other offices (president, treasurer, and historian) are held by students located at the main campus; but students from either campus are eligible. Voting members include the class president and both vice presidents. The SGA holds synchronous meetings bimonthly. Historically, 25% of students participate in student organizations. Currently, 13 of 39 (33.3%) students at the satellite are participating in >1 student organization(s) based out of the main campus and 39 (100%) students are members of the new student organization housed at the satellite. Seven students have pledged fraternities. Implications: Student engagement is extremely important at a satellite campus. Lack of student interaction in the classroom setting necessitates extracurricular opportunities for community. This is clearly demonstrated by the 100% participation in student organizations at the satellite campus. |
