Abstract:

Objectives: The Fresno Test was designed to measure the effect of instruction in evidence-based medicine (EBM). However, in previous offerings of an EBM Pharmacology elective course, it was found that the test was not precise enough to assess specific skills within the five domains of the EBM Method – Ask, Access, Appraise, Apply, and Assess (Sackett 2000). Thus, a worksheet and the Search Skills Grading Rubric (SSGR) were created to assess the following skills in the second EBM domain (Access - Systematic Retrieval of the Best Evidence Available): (1) selecting appropriate sources, (2) appropriate search strategy development (3) using Boolean operators properly, (4) applying limits and filters, (5) refining the search, (6) retrieving relevant results, and (7) managing the results. Methods: Over the 14-week spring 2007 semester, three student groups analyzed three case-based clinical pharmacology problems. For each case, the groups completed the worksheet and submitted their search histories. These were graded by the medical librarian using the SSGR. Results: To determine if the course had an effect on pharmacy students’ ability to search and retrieve appropriate evidence, worksheet and SSGR scores in weeks 6, 10 and 13 will be compared within groups and cumulatively using the t-test. Implications: Grading rubrics designed to assess specific skill sets within the five EBM domains can be developed and incorporated, and may have a role in improving the teaching of EBM to students in pharmacy and other health profession programs.
