Abstract:

The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy began partnerships with schools in Northern Ohio to elicit quality applicants for Pharmacy school (CSU, 2001; Ursuline College, 2006). Part of the partnership entailed delivery of the Functional Anatomy and Pathophysiology (FAP) series from the Toledo campus via distance learning. Previously, the faculty had delivered lecture material as a series of Powerpoint slides accompanied by separate .mp3 files of materials discussed in class. Objective: Recently, faculty have designed video representation of lecture material combining the Powerpoint slides and audio from lectures. These were created to bring the lecture material to distance learning users in a fashion that was as close to lecture conditions as possible. Methods: The creation of these video files combined the two materials into an .mp4 file using the Garage band program from Apple software. The usage and overall satisfaction with delivery of material was queried in a survey. The downloadable movie files are delivered within the WebCT program via a secure server. Results: A survey of digital resource usage by students enrolled in FAP indicated a general satisfaction for the movie depiction of lectures. Of those students indicating that they used video resources, 61% rated the movie files as good or excellent in quality and 74% rated the movies as useful or very useful in studying material presented in lecture on Toledo’s campus. Implications: This suggested that students were satisfied with the method of lecture delivery and that they would use the video by itself or in combination with other resources through the website in WebCT. |
