Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Personal definitions of sexual assault influence recognition of the incident as an assault and post-assault behaviors, if any. This presentation examines importation and deprivation variables, as well as rape myths in explaining inmates’ personal definitions of sexual assault. Over 900 male and female inmates from a large southern prison system answered self-administered questionnaires about various cultural aspects and sexual assault in prison. Results suggest that inmate rape myths, in addition to importation and deprivation-related variables, influence inmates’ personal definitions of what constitutes a sexual assault. |
