Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to test differences in self-disclosures across cultures in online contexts, and to also see whether there is a difference in how these cultures disclose across face-to-face and computer-mediated setting. Participants (N = 67) were asked to complete measures assessing breath and depth of self-disclosures in the two contexts, and one’s culture. The results demonstrated that individualists and collectivists do not disclose in different amounts online. However, collectivists disclose in greater breadth and depth in face-to-face interactions than in computer-mediated channels. This was not consistent for individualists, who had no difference in their disclosure pattern across the divergent channels. Theoretical implications and the intersection of intercultural and the Internet research are discussed.
