Abstract:

The previous extant meta-analysis studies of the Internet and new media have several weaknesses that make them less useful. These weaknesses include a narrow time frame (until the late 1990s), limited keywords used for searching, homogeneous methods (categorical content analysis) and few sources (limited journals). The present study covers more literature by using a greater number of keywords, an expanding time frame, from 1991 to 2005, and inclusion of more academic journals. The categorical content analysis describes the general trends of research interests, and methodological and theoretical perspectives from 1991 to 2005. A semantic network analysis provides an organized understanding of recent developments in Internet and new media literature.
