Abstract:
|
A northeastern Ohio, rural school district is seeking to enhance its students’ physical fitness and to improve its physical education programs. Since Ohio has not yet adopted formal state standards, the District is using the Texas State Standards as a guide to determine the degree to which its students meet formal physical education standards. The District has implemented an activity log with its students in grades four, seven, nine, and ten to evaluate the number of physical activity minutes spent outside of the physical education classroom. Data were collected over four recording periods in which students tracked the number of minutes they engaged in specific types of physical activity. From week one to week four of data recording (over a 5 month period), fourth grade students demonstrated a statistically significant increase in physical activity time. This was also the case for the middle school and high school students. It was also found that those students who scored below the mean for physical activity minutes outside the physical education class during the first recording period were the students who demonstrated the highest overall gains in physical activity over the course of the first year. |
