Abstract:

Negative news coverage, that which conveys a negative or cynical tone about politics, is thought to be harmful because it undermines citizen motivations to become engaged and take part in political life. This paper focuses on the media’s negativity bias, specifically on negativity in the campaign setting. Disproportionate negativity in news coverage is generally thought to come from the economic motivations of news organizations. However, little research focuses on variation between media organizations that might contribute to this tendency to emphasize the negative. This paper investigates the following questions: Is there variation between news organizations in terms of their tendency to focus on the negative? Is negative coverage prompted by the economic motivations of news outlets? If so, which news organizations are more likely to offer negatively slanted coverage? By examining the negative tone in campaign news stories offered by multiple newspapers, this study reveals that negatively slanted campaign news coverage is a function of a newspaper’s competition in the market and the ownership structure of the news organization.
