Abstract:

Recent research finds that the racial/ethnic makeup of a U.S. House districts is associated with the racial/ethnic makeup of the primary election candidate pool and the racial/ethnic composition of the candidate pool is associated with electoral competition (particularly in Democratic primary elections). This naturally leads to questions regarding the relationship between primary divisiveness and general election outcomes conditioned on presence of racial/ethnic minorities in general elections. In this study, we examine how competitive primaries impact general election outcomes in the presence (and absence) of minority candidates in the general election. Using a newly completed data set on all candidates in U.S House elections between 1994 and 2004, we examine the proposed mediating relationship. The projects seeks to add not only to the extant minority politics literature, but to the general congressional elections literature.
