Abstract:
|
This paper examines claims of sexist bias in coverage of Senator Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. Conceptually, we assess the meaning of "sexist bias" and the forms that it might take, and we examine the particulars of the case of Hillary Clinton that make her campaign both an ideal and a problematic test case for revealing the extent and dimensions of sexism in election coverage. We then analyze news coverage from a variety of mainstream news outlets (print, cable, and broadcast) to assess the degree of media bias in coverage of her campaign, and offer a qualitative analysis of gendered depictions of Clinton and her campaign. |
