Abstract:

Targeting inequities in award distribution is one way to sustain women in male-dominated fields (e.g., STEMM) because awards are markers of recognition and may be an impetus for women on an uncertain career path. Yet, data from the RAISE project award database identified a clear gender disparity between award laureates.

The RAISE Project: Gender Disparities in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) Awards The number of women entering science technology engineering mathematics and medicine (STEMM) has steadily increased over the past 20 years with women currently comprising 41% of the workforce. Despite the upward trend in women entering STEMM the attrition rates remain high with over 50% of women leaving the field mid-career. Thus the necessity of interventions targeted towards women is imperative in order to maintain the
is not reflected in the number of women receiving awards. Women received 17% of STEMM awards in 2004 a 20% lag behind the number of women entering the field and over an 8% lag behind the percentage of women who entered the field 25 years ago. An additional investigation found that the percentage of female award recipients was significantly predicted by several variables including the type of award the number of award recipients and the name of the award.
