Abstract:
|
This study is the first statistical study exploring if the presence of multiple warring parties in a civil war affects the likelihood that a peace agreement is reached. It is argued that in a multiparty context the government may seek to ‘win away pieces’ by signing separate deals with weaker groups, and thereby reduce the number of fronts they are fighting. The empirical analysis is based on dyadic data covering the government and each rebel group in all internal armed conflicts, 1989–2003. In accordance with the theory, it is found that the likelihood that the government and a weak rebel group will reach a negotiated settlement increases with the number of warring parties in the conflict. |
