Abstract:

This paper advances the study of securitization by examining securitization as a news
frame. Using a process model of media framing, it addresses the ways in which security is
negotiated not just with the audience but in news accounts – and thus how those accounts can
enable securitizing moves. The results shed new light on how security claims are mediated
through the news; a “securitizing move” can affect not just what the audience thinks and what it
thinks about, but how hard it thinks.
