Introduction Beijing and Taipei experienced an uneasy and even turbulent period of bilateral relations after the mid-1990s particularly during the period 2000-08 when the pro- Taiwan independence party DPP was in office. The election of Ma Ying-jeou to the presidency last spring dramatically changed the political environment of cross- Straits relations. As Ma and KMT have a very different perception of cross-Straits relations
a force on the island that wants to see the eventual unification with the mainland. Under such circumstances my speculation is that cross-Straits relations will eventually end up with the unification but the process will be very long. In the meantime it is also my belief that this long process of restructuring cross-Straits 8 relations will inevitably bring very positive impact on the process of democratization on the mainland.
