Abstract:
|
In this paper, we will explore some of the challenges and also some of the options available to the Obama administration in rebuilding the Transatlantic relationship. The decisions made by this administration and the approach it takes toward its allies will have implications that go far beyond the presidency of Barack Obama. After a brief historical overview we will put relations with the United States’ closest allies into a domestic as well as international context, something made more challenging in light of the global economic crisis that further limits U.S. options. After addressing the changing concept of the threat, an overview of the strategic culture and the strains on the U.S. military because of Iraq and Afghanistan, we will draw some general conclusions about the future of the Transatlantic alliance from the perspective of the United States. |
