Abstract:

In recent decades there has been an explosion both in the creation and in the power of Islamic political parties (IPP) around the world, in countries as geographically distant and culturally distinct as Morocco, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Indonesia. IPPs are considered to be reactionary groups established against the secular state. The belief in state-led Islamization was to capture societal demand for Islamization and to gain legitimacy in the public eye. The expectation in this was that the state through Islamization would take over the claims, functions, and goals of IPPs thereby making them insignificant. However, contrary to expectations, Islamization of the state apparatus has not resulted in the decline of existing IPPs. Rather, these parties have gained further strength in formal electoral politics. Given this, the question I pose is, “How state religious institutions are affecting Islamic political parties’ role in the political sphere, and why state led Islamization has resulted in further strengthening of IPPs. I argue that state-religious associations define both external and internal boundaries for the IPPs where state-led Islamization defines proper religious expression, and initiates changes in repertoires. To answer my question, I will look at four democratic cases with different state-religious associations: Bangladesh, Malaysia, Turkey and Senegal.
