Abstract:

According to a report released by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), American Indian student enrollment in public and tribally-controlled institutions has more than doubled over the past thirty years, reflecting dramatic improvements in American Indian access to higher education. Despite these incredible gains in access, American Indian students continue to fall behind all other groups in regards to educational attainment. The purpose of this paper is to explore the environmental and institutional factors that influence Native American undergraduate student success in higher education. My analysis focuses on college graduation rates of American Indian students attending public and tribally controlled institutions using data from the NCES Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and U.S. Census. I employ linear regression to explore the impact of such factors as the cost of attendance, student preparedness for higher education, availability of financial resources, and other related variables identified in the literature as influencing the success of American Indian students in the higher education system.
