Abstract:

This paper addresses how future citizenship is being built in Mexico, by analyzing a full structural equation model. This model explores the role of television news, family political discussions and parental political participation in building civic awareness and political participation. The analyzed data comes from a survey to Mexican children enrolled in the 6th year of elementary school. Results reinforce the central role of parents in building future citizens, by having an effect on children’s attitudes to political participation. Otherwise, TV news viewing was found as having an effect on children’s civic awareness, but just a weak effect on children’s attitudes to political participation. This process influences children’s self-perceptions of future public sphere involvement, as political and civic awareness.
