Abstract:

This paper suggests that public attitudes toward free trade show regional clustering in their distribution, internal structure and opinion-policy congruence, which has not been explored in the previous literature based on economic approach. It shows that public preferences on trade policy can be shaped by non-economic factors. In particular, Latin American countries show the lowest level in public support for free trade and its internal coherence, and the relative disparity between trade policy and public support. Interestingly, post-communist countries show the highest level of public support and internal coherence, while they also show the relative disparity in opinion-policy congruence. Western developed countries, which have experienced a long history of liberal economic policy, are classified in the middle and higher groups, but not the highest group in the level of support, while they show relatively higher level of internal coherence and opinion-policy congruence. I analyze the 1995-1998 World Values Survey data which covers about 50 countries with statistical methods including cluster analysis. |
