Abstract:

I argue that Pope John Paul II and Jurgen Habermas, a methodological atheist, display substantial agreement regarding the relationship between faith and reason on the one hand and the relationship between cultural solidarity and democratic solidarity on the other. I begin with a brief review of Habermas's prepared remarks at the Catholic Academy of Bavaria in January of 2004. Having identified seven thematic principles regarding philosophy and politics in Habermas's statement, I show how John Paul grants a substantial albeit qualified agreement to Habermas's understanding of reason, faith, and liberal democracy.

JÜRGEN HABERMAS AND POPE JOHN PAUL II ON FAITH REASON AND POLITICS IN THE MODERN WORLD by Celestino Perez Jr. Ph.D. Paper Presented at the Midwest Political Science Association‟s Annual Conference Chicago April 5 2009 1 Introductory notes for a comparison of Habermas and Wojtyla John Paul celebrates the human person‟s ability via unassisted reason to philosophize about the principal metaphysical questions concerning the origin and end of the visible world as well the right way for human persons
point that even a patriotism linked to the constitution cannot forego an undeniable if unspecified dependence on pre-political sources. In the foregoing discussion Habermas‟s thematic principles arising from his study of modernity serve as the framework with which to introduce Wojtyla‟s thinking on faith reason and politics. The two men display substantial agreement on the symbiosis of faith and reason as well as that between cultural solidarity and democratic solidarity. With respect to workaday politics they agree that a
