Abstract:

Abstract: Using legislative elections forty-nine states from 2002 – 2006, this study examines what variables explain the variance in candidate campaign spending across the states. Campaign spending is measured in two ways: the average amount raised by each general election candidate in each chamber, and the average amount raised by each candidate per constituent in each chamber. The objective of the study is to explain why campaigns are more expensive in some states relative to others. The OLS findings suggest that campaign finance regulations, legislative professionalism, district population, and use of multimember districts influence campaign spending in legislative races.

The Determinants of Campaign Spending in State Legislative Elections William M. Salka Eastern Connecticut State University Willimantic CT 06226 salkaw@easternct.edu Abstract: This project examines the factors that influence campaign spending in legislative races across forty-nine states from 2002 – 2006 in part to examine whether there is a correlation between competition and the amount of money raised to fund campaigns. The literature on this question is underdeveloped and theoretical arguments can be made for both possible outcomes predicting either
