Republican (Conservative) Vs. Democratic (Liberal) Party Systems in Contemporary American Politics—Unmasking the Myths

Abstract:

When one views the landscape of the American politics, one readily sees and admires one of the enduring democracies of all time solidly founded in a constitution that is laced with rules and regulations for checks and balances under the rule of law. This democracy is governed by two major parties, the Republican (conservative) and Democratic (liberal) parties even though there are other such splinter groups like the Green and Libertarian parties to name only two, that have tried every four years to field presidential candidate. The study discusses the evolution of the two major parties and asks: Who are the Republicans and who are the Democrats? How did they evolve through time? Who were their predecessors? What political philosophies/ideologies separate one from the other? Is the choice of political affiliation an issue of nurture vs. nature, rich vs. poor? How can these variables be measured qualitatively? Can an entrenched political affiliation trump common sense voting in the support of a presidential candidate of an opposing party for the common good? This paper attempts to answer these questions as a way of reasoning into the merits of choice of political affiliations
