Abstract:

The analysis of terrorism is one of the most vibrant areas of research in political science. There are an increasing number of articles about the causes, the strategies and tactics of terrorist groups. In this paper we will analyze one under-researched aspect of terrorism: the dynamics of the relations between the activities of terrorist groups and the electoral support of parties connected with terrorist organizations. More concretely, we will analyze the impact of terrorist attacks on electoral support for these parties. We will distinguish between different terrorist strategies (indiscriminate versus selective violence, attacks directed against security forces, civilians or politicians) and how they affect electoral support. _x000d_In order to study the consequences of the strategies and tactics of terrorist groups on the electoral support of the political parties connected to them, we will analyze the case of the Basque terrorist group ETA and the succession of parties connected to it (HB, EH, PCTV, ANV). _x000d_This is an inductive paper that combines different research designs, including the analysis of individual survey data and aggregate data. |
