Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Vote overreporting occurs when people who did not vote claim to have voted in a survey. Several voter validation studies have been conducted to determine whether overreporters bias our understanding of the determinants of voter turnout, but have not determined whether the identified overreporting patterns hold true for Latinos and Asian Americans with respect to direction and size of the effects. This study was designed to overcome the possible deficiencies that have been identified in previous voter validation studies and provide the first comparative analysis of the extent to which overreporters bias White, Latino and Asian American models of electoral participation. The data presented here suggest that overreporting is a problem but that the bias is not uniform across race/ethnicity. |
