Abstract:
|
In recent years, there has been a lot of attention paid to the large numbers of unsolved murders of women in Latin America, particularly in Guatemala and Mexico. It is argued that these events represent a widespread failure of these governments to protect women, possibly stemming from institutionalized sexism. This paper will test whether or not this lack of police and judicial protection for women represents a pervasive problem by comparing statistics on arrests, case closures, and convictions in gendered and non-gendered crimes. Data comes from the national police, judiciary, or statistical offices of Latin American countries for which data was available. |
