Kids in Combat: An Empirical Study of the Impact of Children on Intra-state Conflict

Abstract:

The aims of this study are four. First, it will survey the extant literature on children's roles in conflict. Second, it places emphasis on an alternative approach to the study of child soldiers that is largely overlooked in the policy-related literature and academic studies. Diverging from normative studies of child soldiers that focus on the effects of war on vulnerable children, this study explores the impact of children on characteristics and outcomes of intra-state conflict. Third, as a brush-clearing exercise to present this approach, three hypotheses are tested about the effect of child soldiers on intra-state conflict - conflict intensity, duration, and recurrence - and subsequently test them with quantitative data. Finally, this paper addresses the existing data on child soldiers and evaluates its strengths and limitations for systematic analysis of children in war, focusing on compatibility issues with conflict data.
