Abstract:

Scholars have long argued that the level of media coverage for a given issue determines whether it becomes salient in the eyes of the public. These scholars also argue that the tone of media coverage shapes public opinion on the issue, which, in turn, influences whether and how public policymakers address it. More recently, the rising use of the internet has begun to provide an alternative source of news coverage, which allows users to seek and largely control the information they are exposed to. Within this new realm of news media, socially minded organizations such as UNICEF have started emloying internet satellite coverage resources such as Google Earth to generate awareness for their human rights projects. Although still in its infancy, such use of internet satellite resources has a growing potential to affect global public opinion and foreign policy. Accordingly, we examine the potential influence live information processing can have on public opinion and policy making. Specifically, we apply the Google Earth internet tool to an experimental design to test whether exposure to satellite imagery of human rights violations moves participants to support a human rights project and engage in political activism. |
