Abstract:

Civil wars tend to be analyzed as bilateral and static events. Recently scholars have begun to recognize that civil wars involve multiple actors using various and multiple tactics which tend to change over time._x000d_This paper builds upon this literature, making the argument that tactics employed by groups both influence and are influenced by negotiation patterns with the state. Governments might be expected to behave differently depending on the choice of tactic employed by a group. This paper seeks to explore the relationship between multiple group tactics and negotiation efforts by focusing on Southeast Asian intrastate conflicts in the post-World War II period.
