Abstract:

Environmental concerns face citizens around the world in a myriad of contexts. The overwhelming ideology concerning economic welfare and development pressures confront concerned United States citizens. Nature is often left out of "rational" decision making in economic arenas. This paper initially presents an overview of the theory of deliberative democracy and it examines how this theory can help stakeholders advance into the political process to protect and defend nature from the advance of a development "at all costs" mentality. Next, the author conducts analyses of three case studies wherein citizen action made a substantive difference in the direction of environmental public policy and how they affected economic decision making. Finally, the author places these citizen actions within the framework of deliberative democratic theory in an effort to illustrate how broad public participation can be used to strengthen administrative decisions, legislation, and the U.S. construct of a positive relationship with nature. |
