Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Al Jazeera English, the only 24 hour, English-language news station headquartered in the Middle East, launched in 2006 with the goal of offering news focused more on developing countries. Two years later this channel, competing with the BBC News and CNN International, is viewed by 110 million households. This project expands upon previous research presented at the 2008 Midwest PSA conference that content analyzed the online news headlines of Al Jazeera English and the BBC News and discovered a strong, positive correlation between the two outlets’ topical and regional news coverage. Incorporating CNN International, this project will code “top” online news stories for region and topic and analyze features such as photo accompaniment, headline width, and article size. The project will also investigate how the three news sources cover similar news headlines differently, by analyzing article framing, tonality, and source attribution. It is hypothesized that this comprehensive analysis will reveal more distinctive coverage by Al Jazeera English compared to CNN International and the BBC News. This study will also consider whether Al Jazeera English focuses more of its “top” online news coverage on developing countries.
