"Identities, Interests, and Pan-Arabism" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the International Studies Association, Town & Country Resort and Convention Center, San Diego, California, USA, Mar 22, 2006 <Not Available>. 2009-11-24 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p99972_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Arab unity has long been touted by the leaders and peoples of various states in the Middle East. Indeed the concept has been institutionalized in the Arab League and various other institutions. Nevertheless, the interplay among pan-Arabism (with the Palestinian issue as a bond), pan-Islam, and national interests have often produced tensions in the region and the world. The paper reflects on the idea of pan-Arab unity, its contributions and legacies, as well as the tension between Northern interests and regional identities and interests. |
