Gendered Crimes In Policing and Prosecution in Latin America" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the Midwest Political Science Association 67th Annual National Conference, The Palmer House Hilton, Chicago, IL, <Not Available>. 2009-11-27 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p363337_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: In recent years, there has been a lot of attention paid to the large numbers of unsolved murders of women in Latin America, particularly in Guatemala and Mexico. It is argued that these events represent a widespread failure of these governments to protect women, possibly stemming from institutionalized sexism. This paper will test whether or not this lack of police and judicial protection for women represents a pervasive problem by comparing statistics on arrests, case closures, and convictions in gendered and non-gendered crimes. Data comes from the national police, judiciary, or statistical offices of Latin American countries for which data was available. |
