| 1. Nielsen, Erik. ""Arabism" as Ethnic Mobilization in the Darfur region of the Sudan." Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, Marriott Hotel, Loews Philadelphia Hotel, Philadelphia, PA, Aug 12, 2005 <Not Available>. 2009-11-27 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p23357_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: This paper is an exploration into the construction of Arab identity in the Darfur region of the Sudan and how this construction leads to ethnic conflict. I will be looking at the historical boundaries between "Arabs" and "non-Arabs" in the Sudan. The boundaries between groups are formed by various processes, and in this paper I will illuminate some of those processes in relation to Darfur. In this paper I will hope to show that this ethnic identification is being mobilized by the government in the purpose of pushing a radical social agenda. |
