Abstract: This presentation will explore the ways that humane society volunteers and animal rights activists think about their work with and for animals, with a specific focus on the conceptualization of this work as furthering interpersonal, intrapersonal, and/or interspecies peace and justice. By observing and interviewing humane society workers, volunteers, and activists, I will explore the individual and group elaborations of the relationship between humans and non-human animals, the ways in which they relate their work to larger peace and justice movements, and how they think about the outcomes and value of their efforts in reproducing human and non-human relations. |
