Abstract: This article examines an area rarely visited by sociologists, the dance studio. It focuses on a group of unlikely dancers, older students, in an attempt to understand why they are there, taking dancing lessons. Through participant observation and in-depth interviews with dance instructors, dance students aged five through sixty-seven and parents of young students, it examines the experience of the dance class, why the teachers teach and why the students take lessons.
