Review Method: Peer Reviewed
Abstract: The paper reports on a survey of 196 Latino high school students attending a League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) youth leadership conference in Ventura County, California. Responses to questions on leadership are analyzed and grouped into three categories based on leadership perceptions: collective action resolution, leadership style and value orientation. The author finds that respondents were more likely to identify traits associated with transformational leadership (Burns 1978), agentic leadership (Egly and Johannsen-Schmidt 2001) and value-based leadership (Greenleaf 1977). The responses are analyzed by respondent gender and by nativity status. Implications for Latino civic engagement and social capital formation are conisidered and future directions for research in this area are identified
