"Computer, Internet and Social Networking Use in Armenia: The Influence of Skills, Digital Divide Demographics, Language, Innovativeness, Technical Access, Privacy, Social Influence and Collectivism" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the NCA 94th Annual Convention, TBA, San Diego, CA, Nov 20, 2008 Online <PDF>. 2009-12-06 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p260377_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Hargittai (2007) proposed a framework for studying differences in media use which multiple measures of use are described in order to distinguish different actions performed online which can contribute to differences in use, and hence digital inequalities. Multiple measures have been and will be utilized to determine a sense of the digital use landscape within the Republic of Armenia. In study 1, SES, knowledge of Russian, and knowledge of English predicted ownership of personal computer. SES, knowledge of Russian, and knowledge of English predicted personal computer skill. SES, knowledge of Russian, knowledge of English, and Internet connection ownership predicted Internet skill, although a higher speed Internet connection did not predict greater Internet skill than dial-up Internet access, perhaps due to the small sample. SES predicted Internet connection ownership as well as a higher speed Internet connection. Study 2, to be administered in spring 2008, will measure Internet skill levels, Internet use, social networking site use, personal innovativeness, personal attitudes toward the Internet and social networking sites, perceived social normative attitude and use toward the Internet and social networking sites, and concern for privacy. |
