Abstract: Both adult and juvenile crime rates for Part I offenses have decreased since mid-1990 while crime rates for Part II offenses have increased since the early 1990s. The current study examines the arrest rate trends of 35 cities in the state of Texas from 1990 to 2004 to see whether the city-level arrest trends resemble the national trends. Based on urbanization and social disorganization theories, the impact of city population size and the level of social disorganization are examined for juvenile and adult arrest rates overall and by types of offense: violent, property, and total Part II. The findings indicate city-level arrest rates for most of the offense categories did not resemble the national trends, and urbanization and social disorganization theories offered limited explanations for the city-level adult and juvenile arrest rates. |
