"Exploring Girls’ and Women’s Propensity to Study and Enter Careers in STEM Disciplines: Vocational Anticipatory Socialization and Communication Research Opportunities" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the NCA 94th Annual Convention, TBA, San Diego, CA, Nov 20, 2008 Online <PDF>. 2009-12-03 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p259680_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Many adolescent girls continue to lose interest in (STEM) related careers. Although studied by scholars in other disciplines, communication researchers have an opportunity to examine this important vocational anticipatory socialization dynamic (Jablin, 1987, 2001) to reveal the central role of memorable messages (Knapp, Stohl & Reardon, 1981; Stol, 1986) in socializing females away from STEM careers. Theoretical and practical implications are offered, and implications for elevating the importance of communication research for STEM-related disciplines. |
