| 1. Harmon, Mark. "Non-Presidential U. S. Newspaper Endorsements, 2002, 2004, and 2006" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the Midwest Political Science Association, Palmer House Hotel, Chicago, IL, Apr 12, 2007 <Not Available>. 2009-11-24 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p196886_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Following the 2002, 2004, and 2006 elections the author sampled twenty newspapers from the top-100 in circulation, tallying candidate endorsements. The newspapers endorsed incumbents four-to-one over challengers. In two elections the newspapers endorsed equivalent numbers of Democrats and Republicans. In 2004 a quirk of the sample included five Democratic-leaning papers endorsing in an unusually large number of races. The endorsed congressional candidates were more conservative than Congress overall. The percentage of endorsed women increased steadily.
