| 1. Kanouse, Brian. "The Divestiture of Social Conditions: A Critical Critique of Social Identity Theory and Self-Categorization Theory through a Post-Structural Lens" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the NCA 94th Annual Convention, TBA, San Diego, CA, Nov 20, 2008 Online <PDF>. 2009-11-25 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p257761_index.html>Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: This essay investigates Social Identity Theory (SIT) and Self-Categorization Theory (SCT). These two interlocking theories seem to provide a dynamic approach to the manner in which human beings produce social identities. However, as one reads closer, it becomes evident that SIT/SCT’s functionalist/ontological approach to identity forecloses the possibility of being dynamic at all. By approaching these problems from a post-structuralist perspective, a truly dynamic understanding of the social/historical nature of identity categorizations can be had. |
